When I contacted @creativesoulphoto about this shoot, I wanted to showcase the girls’ gifts and highlight their hair. They kept the outfits a surprise until we got on set. 😭😭 Working in the business is interesting. As a dancer, @mj_dances often struggles with her hair. Locs are not common in the dance world, and at times, she feels isolated. Pink tights for auditions. Hair in a french roll slicked back. The looks when she enters because her hair is different. 😒 She has asked me to comb out her locs for that reason. I said, “NO!!!” We don’t submit to the standard. We set it! When I’m on set with @giavannilewis, I have to bring all of her hair items to ensure that the right products are being used in her locs. I style her hair before she gets on set because stylists are not used to doing locs. One person wanted to use a curling iron, and someone else wanted to slap gel and spray it with Vidal Sassoon. 👀 And having locs that are considered “braids” won’t get you many roles because her hair is not an Afro or curly. #sigh As their mother, it’s up to me to set the standard. I won’t raise children that define their beauty by an industry that’s always changing. They will know that they were created with amazing gifts and when chosen for the right parts, they will share their God-given gifts with the world. So, cheers to beautiful, black, natural, loc wearing girls who don’t have to change their looks to fit in. They will never submit to the standard.
