When We Were Young was a wild couple of weekends. When I was standing on stage Saturday looking at all of the people from all over the world that came out to this thing, I couldn’t help but stand in awe of the sheer size of it all. 80,000 or so people, multiple weekends, entirely taking over a city, united by the songs that spoke to them.
One week earlier, the fest was cancelled for dangerously high winds so we called our agent and said “find us a stage somewhere in Vegas and we’ll play.” That stage ended up being a rock bar attached to a driving range near the airport and before we could even get there, more people had showed up than could fit in the space. One $200 acoustic from the guitar center across the street later, we ripped a set outside for the folks that couldn’t get in and then had a wild punk show with La Dispute, Mom Jeans and Sweet Pill inside.
Both shows were special and affirming in their own way and that’s one of the things I love most about doing this—a ledge outside of a driving range, a 200 cap bar stuffed with 600 people, an 80,000 person festival, it all felt like home.
