Each year more than 100,000 birds fly 2,485 miles from their summer breeding grounds on the Arctic tundra to Izunuma, the largest wintering site in Japan. 🐦 Greater white-fronted geese are the most abundant bird species recorded here. They are increasing in numbers – perhaps because of the earlier thawing of their Siberian breeding grounds, which allows earlier and more successful breeding. #WPY57 photographer Kazuaki Koseki to the site there around midnight and waited until just before sunrise to capture this mass departure.
