Each year more than 100,000 birds fly 2,485 miles from their summer breeding grounds on the Arctic tundra to Izunuma, the largest wintering site in Japan. 🐦
Greater white-fronted geese are the most abundant bird species recorded here. They are increasing in numbers – perhaps because of the earlier thawing of their Siberian breeding grounds, which allows earlier and more successful breeding.
#WPY57 photographer Kazuaki Koseki to the site there around midnight and waited until just before sunrise to capture this mass departure. It was Izunuma’s biggest mass departure of the year of greater white-fronted geese.
