My heart is broken with the news of another devastating oil spill in the Ecuadorian Amazon last Friday afternoon. This is the second time the OCP pipeline has burst in two years, leaving 27,000 Kichwa Indigenous people to suffer the consequences. The rivers, food, water and homes of Kichwa communities are now contaminated with oil.
I know firsthand the smell of an oil spill, the headaches and the nausea, and I am so sad that the Kichwa have to live through that again. Oil is a sickness that is ravaging mother earth, endangering the wildlife, poisoning our rivers and ultimately sickening our hearts and spirits.
I have marched in solidarity with the Kichwa Indigenous communities that live downriver and I know how much they suffered after the first spill in 2020. For us, the river is our lifeline and a contaminated river means no clean water, no fish, and it means sickness for our families.
The Kichwa sued the government after the first oil spill and their case is now pending before the Supreme Court of Ecuador. Now is a critical moment, and we have to ensure that the Ecuadorian government cleans up the spill and makes sure the pipeline doesn’t burst again.
We need your help. We need to bring justice to the Kichwa communities who are suffering at the hands of a government that favors oil companies over our Indigenous lives.
