LFC x @vanityfair July/August 2022
In April I spent a few days in Paris visiting the new @dior museum, La Galerie Dior, and speaking to those who know the house best—including Soizic Pfaff, who has worked at Dior since 1974 and helmed the archives since 1996—and cultural projects manager @helene.starkman.
2022 marks Dior’s 75th year in business; an impressive feat for any brand, but especially so for Dior given that its founder, Christian Dior, died just ten years after opening the house. The legendary designer lived a whole life beforehand—studied political science, opened and ran a successful art gallery, served in the military—and at 42 realized a longtime dream of launching a luxury label. His overtly feminine aesthetic and pronounced silhouettes instantly revolutionized fashion, and subsequent creative directors have added to an iconic canon of Dior designs: the Diorissimo oblique print, the saddle bag, the newsprint dress, the Lady Dior tote, etc., etc. As current creative director @mariagraziachiuri shared with me for this story, “Dior is an extraordinary example of the communicative and cultural power of fashion.” What a dream it was to write about that.
Swipe for my Vanity Fair contributor page debut, the Dior pouch @smartshyra gifted me over 15 years ago that I’ll cherish forever, and the early aughts dress I saw on @laurencaruso_’s IG story in 2018 and promptly went to buy from the @object.limited pop-up.
As always, a million thanks to the @vanityfair team: @radhikajones, Claire Howorth, @chapoteau, @princessdiaries202020, @justinpatricklong, @nataliegialluca + @_tara_johnson. Link in bio.
