After centuries of conquest, decades of contamination and years of racism and violence towards our people, I am thrilled to share with you an amazing victory for Indigenous peoples, the Amazon rainforest and our planet’s climate. Yesterday Ecuador’s Supreme Court ruled that WE Indigenous peoples have the right to decide what happens on our land. This means that we can say NO to the dirty mining projects and reckless oil projects that threaten our existence, cultures, rivers and wildlife. This means that we as Indigenous peoples can continue to protect the 23 MILLION acres of biodiverse, carbon rich rainforest that we call our home across the upper Amazon. We as Indigenous people must continue to unite and to resist a global economy and short cited governments that want to destroy our lands. I would like to say thank you to the Kofan people, to the men and women of the Indigenous guard of the Kofan, who have remained connected to their ancestral territory, connected to their sacred traditions and have showed the world a path forward towards dignity, respect and climate justice. As my friend @gretathunberg said to me recently, we will never give up!
