51 yrs ago, men incarcerated in Attica Prison in New York were fed up with overcrowding, censorship of mail, and deplorable living conditions that included one shower a week & one roll of toilet paper a month. 1,821 men organized and rose to demand better treatment in what is now known as The Attica Uprising. The uprising lasted for five days. On September 13th, 1971, then Governor Rockefeller ordered the prison to be retaken by force instead of agreeing to meet basic human needs. With brute force, state police and correctional officers fired 3,000 bullets and tear gas into the prison yard, killing 29 inmates and ten prison workers and wounding 89 others. Ultimately, a total of 43 people were killed during the uprising. Today, we recognize those who lost their lives fighting for their rights in the Attica Uprising. We demand an end to all jails, prisons, immigration detention, youth detention & civil commitment facilities. We also demand the establishment of policies and programs to address the current oppressive conditions experienced by people who are imprisoned.
