HAPPY DIWALI to all that celebrate - Hindus, Jains, Buddhists and Happy Bandi Chhor Divas to Sikhs. This Festival of Lights celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and the human ability to overcome. Breast cancer is not often discussed in the South Asian community. However, my mother, maternal aunt and cousins broke this taboo by sharing their diagnosis within our family and community, and when I was diagnosed at just 29, it enabled me to to talk about my experience and overcome this disease. Sadly South Asian women are often diagnosed at a much later date and stage due to not being as aware of signs and symptoms of breast cancer and not self-checking. This Diwali, please encourage your loved ones to regularly self check and be aware of modifiable risks of breast cancer.
