The Energy of Spring in Chinese Medicine
Spring is the season of rising vitality—a time when the natural world surges with momentum. In Chinese medicine, this is the time of the Liver, the organ that governs smooth flow, like sap rising in a tree or a tiger poised before its leap.
Spring can be stressful with so much energy swirling around us, so finding balance requires action and rest. This season is like a cat alternating between stillness and sudden, precise motion. This is the season to cultivate resilience—a body that bends like bamboo, ready for anything that comes.
捉虎擒蛟” (Zhuō hǔ qín jiāo)
“To catch a tiger by the tail / seize a dragon in its lair.”
This is the energy of elastic readiness.
In spring, we ‘catch the tiger by the tail’—not to wrestle it, but to ride its momentum.
In spring, the Liver’s “tiger energy” is potent but untamed. Like grabbing a tiger’s tail, suppressing this surge (with rigidity or repressed anger) risks backlash.
The Liver thrives on movement that is fluid, supple and graceful, where strength lies in adaptability.
Spring’s vitality is volatile but vital—channel it like a cowboy wrangling a wild horse (or a tiger)!
To harmonize with spring:
* Keep the Liver moving: Gentle exercise, stretches that unwind tension.
* Stay agile: A tiger pivots. Adapt routines to spring’s erratic weather and moods.
* Stay hydrated: The Liver detests dryness; warmth with lemon or mint supports its work.
* Balance activity with rest: Even the tiger waits.
* Channel energy wisely: Redirect vigor into movement (walking, gardening, qigong).
* Respect the force: Overexertion (“fighting” the tiger) drains Liver Qi. Balance activity with moments of catlike repose.
The Liver’s energy demands respect: too harsh a grip (rigidity, stress) invites chaos; too loose (sloth) wastes its vitality.
This is like the Greek “metron ariston”(“moderation is best”)—the Chinese Medicine version just has more tigers and dragons. 🐯🌱
