Religion has long played a prominent role in African American communities since the hight of American Slavery. Religion has given African-Americans hope for a better future in troubling times. Religions such as Christianity, Voodoo, and other African religions have served as a safe space for African American religious expression by using a plethora of rituals where music has always been at the center.
In this work I put an old horn through an African mask to represent the way people of African descent have used music and vibrations as a way to express their religious beliefs.
Another inspiration for this work was the act of sampling records which a lot of hip hop producers use to pay homage to artists they respect. In this work I sampled Last Trumpet, 1995 a work by the late artist Terry Adkins who is one of my favorite artist. In his work Adkins explained. “And so the Akrhaphones actually represented the horns of the first four angels of the Last Judgment.” His use of religious commentary in this work definitely inspired me. By sampling his work it was a way of paying homage to his legacy while also using my conceptual ideology of music production in my art practice.
