It is a fundamental human right, and it is harrowing to witness women in Iran suffering to attain something they were entitled to upon birth – safety, expression, and self-ownership. There is currently a revolution taking place in the streets, schools, and bodies of Iran and its people. Protests were ignited after the murder of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by the ‘morality police’ for wearing her hijab incorrectly and beaten into a coma that subsequently led to death. As people started protesting, more and more went missing, such as 17-year-old Nika Shakarami, who initially went to protest but was separated from her friends. In her last known communication, she texted her friends that security forces were chasing her — then her phone was turned off. It took 10 days for her family to track her down; they found her dead at a detention center morgue with skull and facial wounds and fractures. The Internet has been cut off, and the women who are speaking up on social media from inside Iran are risking their lives to do so.
