Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, died on this date in 1919. He’s pictured (lower left) riding into the Grand Canyon in this 1911 Kolb Brothers photo, which appeared in our January 1953 issue. About the natural wonder, he said: “The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison — beyond description; absolutely unparalleled throughout the wide world ... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness.” Mr. Roosevelt established the Grand Canyon Game Preserve by proclamation in 1906, and declared Grand Canyon National Monument in 1908.
