“The Delta Series” — Chapter 2 / I grew up studying the natural world through the refracting lens of the Arctic’s sea ice. The fractals branching across the frozen surface mimicked the ancient lichens that grow on rocks, weaving like a thread binding all life. Years later and thousands of miles from my childhood home, I found myself soaring over the coastal plains of Baja, Mexico to photograph the end of the Colorado River’s journey. In the grips of what many are calling the worst megadrought in 1,200 years, the already overburdened river no longer reaches the sea. Instead, it fans out in a spectacular and heartbreaking display of tree-like carvings through salt and silt.
