With voters heading to the polls on Saturday to elect their municipal representatives, experts break down what they do and don’t really control.
As candidates pledge to make housing more affordable, there’s one thing a B.C. municipality can’t do — build its own housing.
“Cities are not in the business of building housing, and they couldn’t afford it,” said Dr. Hamish Telford, a professor at the University of the Fraser Valley.
City officials do provide incentives or create zones to encourage private developers to build in certain areas.
In Metro Vancouver, the long-term priorities for transit are decided by TransLink’s Mayors’ Council — a committee of all 21 mayors in the region. Bigger projects require funding from higher levels of government.
Policing responsibilities are often split across three bodies: funding largely comes from cities, priorities are set by police boards in cities that have municipal police forces and oversight is provided by the province.
