Through @ltx_connect I've had the opportunity to see the power of storytelling in various mediums and learning about what it takes behind the scenes to get our stories shared on-screen thanks to @3_lopez & @lacollaborg as partners. Through @kaporcenter I've seen the power of knowing our data and barriers with enough nuance to propose new solutions to make the tech ecosystem more inclusive AND recognizing that its the entire ecosystem that needs to be strategically aligned to move the needle. Seeing the representation barriers in #Hollywood of Latinx/e mirror #tech representation is not by accident and reinforces that #representationmatters across all roles. The Latinx/e population is about 18% of the US population - equating to 62M people and growing, yet Latinx/e workforce representation in Hollywood is under 11% (source: US Government Accountability Office) and the Latinx/e workforce in tech is still hovering at 7% (source: Kapor Center) despite the Latinx/e accounting for 51% of the population growth in the US from 2010-2020 (source: Pew Research). Without having strategies that account for the population growth and shift of Latinx/e talent across all levels, how will we ever increase our leadership numbers and decision making power - which in tech still hovers at 4% with C-suite representation being even lower. We have a whole new generation looking for change and innovation and creating it themselves. We really need new ways to tackle these problems and turn them into opportunities - that will require rethinking current systems through policy change, business re-prioritization, more inclusive hiring & promotion practices, as well as new models of ownership, creation, distribution, licensing, and financing. These two sectors are now even more interconnected since the pandemic and provide an opportunity for perhaps the largest shift of who is part of that workforce. .
