In the last couple of months something changed. I suddenly went from someone who hardly ever went in the water, hating the cold and scared of what may be lurking to this person, plunging into icy streams and wading through unknown rivers at every opportunity. Now, we could put it down to desperation caused by the extreme heat this summer. But I have another reason for this change, a book. In May I read Waterlog by Richard Deakin and became aware of a world I was missing out on. If you don’t know the book it is his journal of swimming his way around Britain. Not a circumnavigation but an exploration of all the different places one could swim in. From moats to rivers, fens, ponds, sea, locks and hidden pools. It fascinated me and inspired me and made me brave enough to try it for myself. And so far I’m loving it...But currently trying to build up the courage to plunge into the river near dads house.
