🎵Raindrops on silverswords and feathers on nēnē🎵
Did you know that ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (the Hawaiian Language) has over 300 different words to describe and discuss rain? Here are few types of ua (rain) that you might encounter on your visit to Haleakalā during any season!
1. Ua ʻAwa – chilly rain, cold and bitter
2. Kiʻo wao – cool, mountain rain accompanied by wind and fog
3. Lilinoe – fine mist
4. Nāulu – sudden shower of fine rain
5. Kahakikī – to pour down violently with a roar
6. Nākikikiʻi – slanting rain
Remember to always come prepared for any type of weather and check the live Crater webcam for current weather conditions at the summit. Just note that if you see a gray screen... those are clouds that could mean ua is near! https://www.nps.gov/media/webcam/view.htm?id=56F5E0DC-9116-8502-7F673D0FF0B8378A
