Ardverikie House by @bokehm0n is the site of an earlier shooting lodge leased in 1844 to the Marquess of Abercom. At this time there was a surge in interest for the Scottish Highlands, attracting the likes of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert who stayed at Ardverikie for three weeks in 1847. The royal couple would go on to purchase their own Highland estate at Balmoral in 1852.
The house was latterly leased to Lord Henry Bentinck in 1860 and then purchased by Sir John Ramsden in 1871. Shortly after in 1873, the house was destroyed by fire and was rebuilt in the Scottish baronial style between 1874-1878.
Ramsden’s son, Sir John Frecheville Ramsden, inherited the lands after his father’s death in 1914. The majority of the land was sold off following the two World Wars, and in 1956 Sir John transferred the Ardverikie estate to a family company under the chairmanship of his son, Sir William Pennington-Ramsden. The company, Ardverikie Estate Limited, still owns and manages the estate today.
Ardverikie House has also featured in the BBC series ‘Monarch of the Glen’, and as Balmoral Castle in the Netflix series, ‘The Crown’.
