A fun new exhibition featuring some old materials is all about LA's early transit history.
Organized by Metro Art in collaboration with the @metrolibraryarchive, The Yellow Car and Los Angeles is a glimpse into LA’s early transit history and how its roots continue to shape our transit routes in LA today.
The Yellow Cars of the Los Angeles Railway (aka LARy) haven't had the same nostalgic hype their Pacific Electric Red Car siblings have by history-loving Angelenos, but they are just as - if not more! - important.
The Yellow Cars were the backbone of transit for millions of everyday Angelenos who lived and worked in a six mile radius from downtown.
Artful weekly passes got you to La Brea on the west...Huntington Park to the east...Eagle Rock to the north...Hawthorne to the south...
The exhibition is open daily in Union Station’s Waiting Room Gallery.
See photos, maps, design drawings and other reproductions sourced from Metro’s Dorothy Peyton Gray Transportation Library and Archive on display side-by-side with hand-painted place names, path-like dots and lines, and colors inspired by vintage transit maps and painted signs in the archive.
There’s even a special section on LA’s very first buses!
As Metro librarian Matt Barrett says, “LARy is the great grandparent of the transit system we have today!”
