Broken Symbolism current exhibition at Space Gallery, Nizhny Tagil. A series of documentary excerpts from southwestern Georgia that deal with the unspoken historical past. Inspired by the poems of Elene Dariani, the frag- ments open an abstract dialogue between female identity. Dariani who is assumed to be the pseudo- nym of Elene Bakradze (1897–1979) arguably the first woman in Georgia who wrote candidly about female desire. The poems were published under the name of Paolo Iashvili, a well-known male poet by that time and one of the leaders of the Georgian symbolist movement. Elene Dariani’s poems were a subject of controversies, rumours and discussions for a long period of time. The Dariani mystery is symptomatic of the limitations placed on women in Georgia even as they were beginning to break down cultural and sexual barriers.
