Mission complete.
NASA could be one step closer to keeping us Earthlings safe from massive asteroids that might be careening toward our planet.
The DART spacecraft finally reached asteroid Dimorphos yesterday with a mission to knock the rock ever so slightly off its orbital path. Scientists say the mission provides insight into whether the method could be effective for Earth in the case of an emergency.
“We’re embarking on a new era of humankind, an era in which we potentially have the capability to protect ourselves from something like a dangerous, hazardous asteroid impact,” said Lori Glaze, director of NASA’s Planetary Science Division.
