"Tell me I’m pretty!" (A few people did.) Costume number two this year is #trixietang from #fairlyoddparents (@nickelodeon / @fairlyoddparents). Two friends joined as #timmyturner and #jorgenvonstrangle. Trixie is a bit of a complicated character. I grew up being in awe of her because her outfit is SO good, and she was pretty and popular. I think little Lyss wanted so badly to be the girl who grew up to be the main character’s love interest so she’d feel important. Then she realized wait, shouldn’t she be the main character? Trixie is a cartoon character, so her traits are cartoonish and poke fun at beautiful women needing constant validation because everyone’s a little insecure. She is a punchline like every other character there. And yet I still remember the episode where she secretly went and did "boy" things like go to a comic book store. She made a simple comment about how if boys did more girl things, girls could do more boy things without stressing about it. Gender is, after all, a construct. I’m glad that idea got planted in my mind as a kid because activities are activities. I only hope to see more men less afraid of doing things perceived as "feminine." We’re all humans. I also threw a party! Swipe to see more photos from it, including ones of the cupcakes I made and the white board I illustrated with an important voting PSA that I will repeat here. Early voting is ongoing in most places. This election is really important. Go make your vote heard!
