Mom was always excited and busy during this time of year as she prepped for the @santafeindianmarket where she was the chair of the Native American Clothing Contest for 17 years and an emcee for a few years afterwards. From 1992 to 2009, you could find her on stage–and off–in the Plaza on Sunday morning of Indian Market with different emcees like the late Rex Arrowsmith (pictured here) sharing her knowledge about the incredible artistry walking by on contestants. And, before she chaired the contest, she herself was a contestant (pictured in a Kiowa Red-Sleeve dress with my family’s cradleboard). In 2011 Mom received SWAIA’s Pov'ika Award for a lifetime of Native arts advocacy. Mom loved sharing knowledge about our beautiful Native clothing and SWAIA’s clothing competition was one of the many ways she worked to educate non-Natives about the beauty and extraordinary creativity that is Indian Country.
