Squamish 50km Race Recap! I promise to make this shorter than my 20 min description of the course on the live stream. Sunday's 50km was primarily type 2 fun. I have been working on starting races faster than I want to so off I went with the lead pack. Cue nervous giggles and self talk 'it's fine, you're fine'..I was fine. Don't judge what you're doing in an ultra off of what others are doing. Heading up Galactic I felt the humidity set in, I kept it calm and chipped away. I didn't let it get to me when a few men passed. It was a real hike run combo. As I descended I felt the desire to get to Quest. Get there and cool off I told myself. It might not have seemed like that hot of a day but it was humid AF and I was 1 day pre period so, ladies you know, my insides were an easy bake oven. Bodies are cool! I iced at the word of mouth aid station and it was magical, continued to quest and let the high of seeing Katrina and everyone there rebuild the stoke! I was energized, cooled (icy bucket dumps overhead are a life force) and ready to head up climb. From here I just focused on always eating (1 gel every 20mins) and staying positive. The section from top of climb through to farside is sneaky, it hurts and it gets hard, or it did for me anyways. I felt like I was balancing wanting to push with cautiously managing oncoming leg cramps and stomach upset. I played with the gears, pushing as soon as the stomach let me, and hydrating like wild to help reduce any cramping (about 1L per hour). Farside. Sweet, sweet, (jurassic) farside. I dropped everything and set out with a bottle for cooling and one for drinking. It was on. Katrina told me to get going and so I did. With no intel on my lead all day I just knew it was time to go and if I cramped or imploded, I'd have to figure it out. The final 11km felt strong and I loved getting to see some 23km racers and move back up the field a little. I'm proud of managing a day that truly was a mixed bag and keeping a mindset that let me push until the end. Racing 50km is always an adventure and I love the lessons each one brings. Running is AWESOME 💙
