Tongue Ties đź‘…
If you notice a few of these symptoms with feeding, I highly recommend having a feeding assessment completed by a feeding therapist (OT, SLP, and some PTs or lactation consultants) well-versed in tongue ties. We will assess your baby’s oral motor functioning to provide better insight into how the tongue tie is impacting your baby’s feeding skills.
Why is this important?
Because function is what matters. Not just the appearance of a tie.
When it comes to ties, different professionals have their roles. Unfortunately, the role of the feeding therapist (OT, SLP, and some PTs and lactation consultants) is often skipped. And that is typically when we don’t see the best outcomes. Not only will a feeding therapist help to determine the need for a release, but we are also extremely important to see an improvement in feeding.
Skipping the feeding therapist is like getting a knee replacement and then never seeing an OT or PT for rehab. Sure, the problem is “fixed,” but the function is not there. It’s the same with a tongue tie release. You can release the tie and “fix” it, but without oral motor training, the function will never be the best it could be.
So, don’t skip the feeding therapist. If you’re concerned, Book a Feeding Consult (virtual or in-home!) with The Feeding Company.
**also, please note tongue ties DO impact bottle feeding too! And many of the symptoms are the same.
