We first met as kiddos in Upstate New York when Issey and his family were still going back and forth between Japan and the US quite often. In the ten years that we’ve been in a relationship, he’s taught me a lot about the experience of “otherness” and the way prejudice against Asians in America is so frequently brushed off or overlooked entirely. We have been watching (and most unfortunately, experiencing firsthand) the rise in Anti-Asian racism since the start of the pandemic. But most importantly, let us say: this ain’t new. It can be tough to share these stories and unearth a lot of past trauma, but we all owe it to our community to *talk about this* and encourage real dialogue, awareness and healing.
