The best winters start with loquat blossoms.
Loquats, like a number of other fruits (strawberry guavas for example) are rarely seen in markets (even farmers markers) because they bruise easily, but they are some of the best you’ll ever have.
If you’ve never had one, a loquat tastes kind of like a tropical peach and has big brown seeds inside similar to lychee.
The trees are all over the southern half of California and their fruit often goes to waste because people aren’t familiar with them and the tree itself is pretty decorative.
If you have a neighbor with loquats that go to waste, ask if you can harvest them.
in Europe, you may see loquats referred to as Japanese Medlar, but the plants are very different.
