“Resist” in Austin rain. • Some elements included in this mural: - reproductive rights, trans rights- don’t know how else to say it, Texas legislators - portrait of Sam Lung, the father of one of the first 5 Chinese families in Austin. Chinese families came to Texas much later because of the Chinese exclusion act. Sam Lung’s family opened Lung’s Chinese kitchen, the first Chinese restaurant in Austin, which was beloved by locals. He also made fish kites that he donated to children, which I discovered after I had already painted a fish kite above this character. - another of the 5 families I researched was born from a couple consisting of a Mexican woman who married a Chinese immigrant, and who consequently lost her citizenship due to restrictive laws against the Chinese at the time. In my mind while I painted this character evolved into something like the offspring of these ancestors, so I decided to incorporate elements of these cultures, including an armadillo alebrije, lotería cards, Chinese lion, mahjong tile, southwestern print, longhorns, peachbabies, etc. Asian Americans are the fastest growing population in Austin- I hope you feel at home here - playful elements discussing queerdom and bodily autonomy. Shibari, gay bats (brokebat mountain), I think I’m Funny - little spray portrait of my sis @_emilyding whose family resides in Texas and whose friendship, thoughtfulness and artistic power are treasured values to me - Books by Raul Salinas, revolutionary poet powerfully impt to the Austin community, whose portrait @leviponce was painting next to me, and @ocean_vuong x @alokvmenon (from texas) whose works on the queer experience have proven pivotal in my growth & many around me - something cool for @somethingcoolstudios and the moon card for @uloang and @fabianrey who were so kind and trusting to bring me to Austin and take care of me, and share the lush young powerful creative community that resides here 🖤 - a lot of mystery spirits that came out of the ether, probably talking about ancestry, but sometimes I don’t know who they are or where they came from, yet •
