The OG Blue Crush #IYKYK I’ve been diving into the women’s surf film archive ( they do exist!) for the last week. We recently had Floridian @karina.petroni on @waterpeoplepodcast — for those of you who remember Bill Ballard’s pioneering performance films of the early 2000s you’ll remember Karina as the tween queen bleached blonde grommie bed jumping with @stephaniegilmore — and surfing the Gold Coast. Karina was an East Coast sensation who started monetising her surfing at 10 (thanks to fierce family management — what could possibly go wrong?). She offers much wisdom about the play and perils of surfing as a career path. In our chat with Karina, I misspoke and said that it was Blue Crush that I remember her early stardom from, and it wasn’t until I went back to watch that I saw it was actually Bill’s second film in the series, Peaches, that features the girl groms like Karina, @smulanovich and Kristen Quizon. Anyway, the opening sequence of the original Blue Crush is so good I had to share. I can’t say that the film made teenage me want to get barrelled, but it totally sold me on the outrageous fun and friendship of a surfing life.* *and if I’m honest, also Roxy bikinis.
