These ants are definitely spiraling. It’s a phenomenon called a ‘death circle’ or a ‘death spiral.’ Army ants will start circling around and around. They won’t stop until they literally drop dead from exhaustion. Ants are blind and rely on pheromones to follow the trails of other ants. But if that trail loops, they end up in the aforementioned death spiral. Ants’ survival is based on group behavior. But this same pathological behavior is what traps them on this path toward their inevitable demise. #Ants
