Friday morning we unveiled our plans for a critical restoration project along the Loop at 29th street at a press conference held by @NewtownCreekAlliance. Elected officials, community advocates, and neighbors gathered in the LIC urban heat island amidst truck traffic and thick clouds of dust to push forward this vision of ecological restoration, public land reclamation, and community access along this degraded and unmaintained MTA owned street—the site of a recent bulkhead collapse. For years, the community has been seeking access to the Creek, open space for students and workers, and the environmental benefits generated by ecological restoration at this site. In the wake of the recent bulkhead collapse we need to rebuild. A natural shoreline is possible.
