Warhol photographed David Hockney at his Paris studio in December of 1973. The two had arranged to exchange portraits. At this time Warhol's portrait styled changed, becoming more painterly, incorporating bold brush strokes with thick acrylic paint and finger painting. Warhol instructed Hockney to put his fingers in his mouth, a gesture uncommon to Hockney, but not to Warhol. Warhol's self-portraits of 1966 and 1967 has the artist fingers against his mouth and over the chin. The Polaroids from this portrait session show being a willing collaborator and gifted improvisationalist.
