Xavier Corbero’s Labyrinth (Acrylic on Fiber Print) 14 months ago - in the middle of the pandemic. Barcelona was completely shut down but I managed to make my way into Corbero’s iconic “Labyrinth” architecture as sculpture. The empty city mirrored the unfinished structure, an unrealized place for gathering. Ricardo Bofill said of his friend. “He liked to go about making things, testing out both architecture and sculpture, but he didn’t really know what function any of it had. Xavier had a very vague sense of how his space would end up. Sometimes he said it would be a guest house or a restaurant. In the end it’s a space, nothing more, nothing less it doesn’t have a function. But you can build a form and then look for a function.” For me, his shadows inspired photographic redaction through paint- to emphasize what a shadow erases.
