The phrase "alpine wine" has come to have some meaning in our little wine world. Light in body, structured by salts and minerals, and often a floral or herbal fragrance are typical. When they're at their best, they taste like untouched mountain snow. David's wines from the Savoie represent some of the best, from two of the most subtle and elegant crus in the region. Marin, provenance of "la sauvageonne" (the little savage one) sits right on Lake Geneva. (They call it Lac Lémant where David is from) It's the most alluvial soil in Savoie, and so the wines have a tension and minerality like no other. In Marignan, we have north-facing slopes, quite rare in the cool climate. "l'insouciance" (recklessness) is an ethereal wine with the subtlest touch of floral sweetness. David learned these places as a partner at Vignes du Paradis, but David wanted to work in a more natural and transparent way, so the names of these cuvées were the result. Anyway, I find the wines to be anything but. They are pristine examples of some of the precious few cold climates we have left in France. The humble and quiet nature of these wines speak perfectly to this beautiful place we hope to visit for many years to come.
