The mistral wind is whipping up forest fires across southern France that have forced more than 12,000 people from their homes and ruined holidays. Sweltering conditions across the Mediterranean have brought apocalyptic scenes in Spain and Portugal, where more than 75,000 acres of land (30,000 hectares) have been set ablaze and the temperature hit a national record of 47C in the northern Portuguese town of Pinhao.
