Thank you to everyone listening <3 Interviewing 60+ artists, entertainers & thinkers over four days at Frieze in February was extremely fun & nourishing. I took for granted the inevitability of seeing everyone there throughout the year, but I never took for granted these guests sharing their time & stories with me. I got teary eyed at lunch everyday, feeling so present in everyone’s wisdom, talent & generosity. I love doing what I love with the people I love. I loved returning to the same set day after day & seeing my best friends. I hate doing what I don’t love, but I’ve done that a lot to keep going, to make money, & because I didn’t have the self-worth to say no. Thank you @foryourart for inviting me into your booth to host this. I like myself the most when I listen deeply. Patrisse Cullors told me “LA is ready to change the way we’re treating the most vulnerable here” & spoke about her performance piece “Fuck White Supremacy, Let’s Get Free.” Rachel Lord talked about designing surfboards as “interpersonal communication between man & dolphin” & processing internal “seeds of anger” into “blossoming sprouts of compassion.” Sanam Sindhi described handwriting as “a way of creating intimacy with yourself” & implored us to hire more Southasian creatives. Alexa Demie gave the advice “Just make shit” & reflected on growing up a dreamer in LA. Hans Ulrich Obrist spoke to creating a global dialogue that listens & visiting Luchita Hurtado in LA. Peter Shire remembered Julius Shulman’s insistence that he create an iconic image for himself & realizing that image is a chair. Sam Buck talked about singing & painting & his much-missed country revue. Janicza Bravo discussed directing “Zola,” expanding where & how we look for stories to adapt into films & why life in hyperbole makes sense to her. Justice Singleton expressed the inspiration behind Justify Writers Group & mused on sexiness. Liz Goldwyn shared what it’s like to be a female founder in the sex-tech space & her bibliophilic fantasies. Blaine O’Neil encouraged us to use language that’s direct, sincere & vulnerable. Journalists aren’t supposed to fall in love with their subjects, what does that make me?
