Introducing our next Spotlight on @imdad_barbhuyan who tells us how he captures subjects in the best possible light. Check out his work on @jcdecaux_uk’s digital screens from now until the end of September. What’s the inspiration behind your featured piece?
 The image is from my series ‘My mother & I’. I had quit my job & gone home for a while but I ended up staying for more than seven months, which is the longest since I left home for college. I had always been close to my mother, we speak everyday but having been away for more than 10 years estranged us in many ways. This time let us familiarise ourselves with the people we had become. I had grown so much during college & she had just lost her own mother, so being with her during the pandemic, her grief & the process of creating this series brought us closer than ever before. 


How does your heritage influence your creative process? 
What lies at the heart of both my cultural heritage & my upbringing is making the most of what we have. Our festivals are all centred around cycles of nature & seasons & our crafts incorporate local materials like bamboo, jute or clay. I am inspired by similar things; nature & everything that comes from it. I also have a simple & meditative approach to creating my images. I work with natural light, treating my subjects as sculptural pieces that I am getting to know through my gaze, not necessarily the camera. 

 What is currently driving your creativity? 
Travelling & staying for a long period in a new place, a different light or seeing a flower for the first time really excites me. So new things I guess, is what I am currently seeking. 

 Can you share one thing that you find interesting? 
I am currently re-watching old movies because I really don’t relate with most of the things out now. I had watched the best ones when I was too young & it’s really interesting to see how we notice different things every time. I am looking at things like the interior decor, some table setting, a scenic location, colour combinations, a conversation - & it’s all so inspiring. #somethingspaces #imdadbarbhuyan
