Thank you to @MotherJonesMag magazine for this profile of #IllustratedBlackHistory out in their January / Feb 2023 issue. I received an advanced copy today and had to share it. It’s a random thing to state, but there have been very few stories on my book that have shown multiple portraits in one sitting, so I really appreciated that the designer of the page decided to lay the story out in this way. The viewer can see pioneers like Richard Pryor, Suzan-Lori Parks, Ben Carson, and Lean Penniman at first glance. Whenever I do any interviews, I’m always fascinated to see how the writer decides to interpret my words in the context of the story. Often times we are speaking longer than the publication has the room to print. But I thought Emily Hofstaedter did a great job distilling our lengthy conversation in a few substantive sentences. Even more back story. I used to be the Art Director of Mother Jones several lifetimes ago. I met some really important people that are part of my inner world during my tenure there. Brilliant writers, reporters, and editors like Ann, Leigh, Adam, Rina and Chloe, who made my time there so meaningful. Thank you to CJ and MB for welcoming me and my book back.
