In a study published by the American Diabetes Association, it was found that the number of Americans under the age of 20 with type 2 diabetes may increase by about 675% over the next few years if trends continue. According to researchers, those who are in the Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American American communities are more likely to be diagnosed with the disease in comparison to those who are White. The expected increase is likely due to the rising rates of child obesity in the US as well as an increasing presence of diabetes when individuals reach child-bearing age. The numbers from this study raise concerns over healthcare access, nutrition in the United States, and health equity among different ethnic groups. A statement by the CDC has highlighted the importance of taking care of the US youth following this study, stating; “This new research should serve as a wake-up call for all of us. It’s vital that we focus our efforts to ensure all Americans, especially our young people, are the healthiest they can be.” #Diabetes
