How old were you when you learned about the concept of consent? We utilize consent every single day yet so many folks don’t learn about it until they’re adults and exploring s-xually with others. I wholeheartedly believe that our lack of education around consent with children and young people is a major contributing factor to the high rates of SA on college campuses and more generally, rape culture. When we teach consent as “yes means yes” and don’t expand on that, we’re left with a bunch of people who want to explore themselves but don’t know how to do it in a safer way. Consent is ultimately a culture that you build around yourself. That culture includes things like permission, boundaries, communication, negotiation, and care. When we conflate consent and permission, we’re ignoring so many important practices that keep up feeling connected and regulated during play.
