Head outside tonight and see the total lunar eclipse! πŸŒ•πŸŒ–πŸŒ—πŸŒ˜πŸŒ‘πŸŒ’πŸŒ“πŸŒ”πŸŒ• This will be the last total lunar eclipse until 2025. The eclipse begins at 12:02 am (PST) on Nov. 8th and lasts until 5:56 am. The maximum will be at 2:59 am. It will be fully visible through most of North America and the Pacific. Total lunar eclipses are also called "blood moons" because of the eerie red color that the moon takes on. This is because, during an eclipse, the moon is in Earth's shadow, opposite the sun. Since this light source is directly blocked, the only light that can reach the moon from the sun has to bend around the Earth through its atmosphere. The light that makes it to the moon from Earth’s atmosphere appears orange and red. Sequoia and Kings Canyon are great places to experience this event because we are a certified International Dark Sky Park. That means that the quality of our night skies is excellent for viewing astronomical events like the eclipse! You can help protect SEKI's dark skies by using red filters on lights whenever possible and by keeping your lights pointed downwards.
