Dumb early this morning, as I was going to bed, I clicked on “Living Single,” my sleepy time show, and the universe booted me over to this episode. We’re within spitting distance of my 31st, so naturally I’m all moony and reflective. I fell asleep thinking about how all I ever wanted to be when I grew up was simply “an adult,” a person completely of my own making. But no matter how devoutly I studied the four women of the show in that journey, there was no one more influential than Whoopi Goldberg. And now that I am a gorgeous weirdo of an adult, the sweetness of the victory of self-arbitration is finally kicking in: I’m getting to do it my way, a lottery ticket of a life. Thank God Whoopi won it first.
