tonight’s kitchen view: sunset-through-wildfire smoke + food-for-thought 💔
Chief Seattle once said “what we do to Earth we do to ourselves.” We know, now, that clear cutting the forests, polluting the oceans + spewing toxins into the air harms all living beings. Humankind included. But less obviously, what we - humans - do to ourselves, we do to the Earth too.
And this relates directly to the foods we eat.
The foods we eat - and where they come from - have a MASSIVE impact on our environment. 30% of carbon emissions come from our commercial food system - + that doesn’t include how far our foods travel to get to us, or how far we travel to get our food.
Wildfire season has arrived in the West, and I see so many calls to action spreading over this platform - to give more/do more/be more for our planet. One tremendous way to do that is to choose our foods more wisely. We eat several times a day - each time is an opportunity to do good.
Food is already fraught with microbargains- so here are a few things to focus on:
🌱 eat more ACTUAL PLANTS
🌱avoid all “plant foods” in packages - these are not “better for Earth,” they’re just a different kind of problem
🌱 buy local whenever possible
🌱 choose animal products produced on regenerative farms
🌱 look up what regenerative farming really IS. 😉
🌱 avoid commercial systems for eggs, dairy + meat which are massive contributors to soil degradation, water contamination, fossil fuel use, deforestation + carbon emissions.
🌱 ...and if all else seems like too much, just cook. Cook, cook cook whenever you can. Buy real foods in their original state from sources you TRULY trust, + cook your little heart out. It’s a small way to make a big difference, for you and Earth - every time you take a bite.
