Hurricane Ian intensified and is now just shy of a dangerous Category 5 status, with top winds at 155 mph as it moved closer to Florida's southwest coast this morning.
Millions of Florida residents have been urged to evacuate and prepare for what could be a disastrous landfall. Forecasters said the Fort Myers area could be flooded by a storm surge of up to 18 feet.
Ian slammed Cuba Tuesday, leaving the entire Caribbean island nation without power. Forecasters are expecting the storm to crash ashore Wednesday evening south of Tampa Bay, somewhere between Naples and Sarasota.
"It's time to hunker down and prepare for this storm. This is a powerful storm that should be treated like a tornado was approaching your home," Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said Wednesday morning.
