Aya Takano @takano.aya served as a judge for GEISAI#21 @geisai , an incubation program for contemporary artists in Japan, and selected two artists. They were Ryusei Nakajima @syoshi_syoko and Mariko Kubo @mkjvtt , each of whom has been offered a cash prize of 100,000 JPY and a solo exhibition at Hidari Zingaro @hidarizingaro .
The second of the two, Mariko Kubo's solo exhibition, has already opened and will run until Tuesday, December 20.
Her work is large scale and powerful, but she had provided no understandable explanation of her career as an artist or of her mindset for creating her artwork that could be presented to those who took interest. Even though she had already created a website and social media accounts, they only contained some poems. I expressed my concern that at this rate, no one would be compelled to buy her work even if we took the trouble to hold her solo exhibition, and asked her if she would be okay with that. She looked taken back and said that she had assumed it would seem cool not to offer up too much details. She asked me, “What shall I do?” so I gave her advice as to the basic information she might want to provide.
I reminded myself that in order for artists to grow, they also need supporters who can pay attention to details. Please come visit the on-going exhibition and see her work in person.
