What’s the inspiration behind the piece that’s featured? My inspiration behind the featured work was to celebrate the diversity of people affected by reproductive health disparities. The group it was for wanted to advertise specifically to trans/non-binary people who are marginalized in conversations about reproductive health. I wanted each figure to embody a part of my friends & community so that they could help others feel seen. How does your heritage influence your creative process? I was drawn to illustration as a medium because of its potential for storytelling. My favorite formative memories begin with my parents & grandma telling me proverbs & stories with very common West-African themes, about trust, love, morality, etc... I would re-enact them in my sandbox afterward. What is currently driving your creativity? I have been finding a lot of inspiration in jewellery, insects, & flowers recently. I love beauty conceptually, & I think they all embody something gorgeous. I've been feeling jaded because inequalities have been up in my face a lot more than usual, but the urge to imagine liberation & a world where those things don't exist gets me out of the rut. Can you share one thing that you find interesting right now? I have always been very interested in bringing some of the forms & colors I explore in illustrations into analog & other 3-d spaces. I'm constantly exploring different methods of doing this, soft sculpture & fashion have been the most exciting, but I'm also experimenting with wood, metal, & ceramics. #somethingspaces #AmirKhadar
