Static” -20”x20” acrylic painting on canvas Art has always been a form of escapism for me. When I sit down with my art supplies and put on music to listen to, I tend not to worry about anything else. Recently though, it has been harder to “escape” from all of the bad things happening in the world. This painting is a result of a period of increasing anxiety and disconnection caused by recent events in the US. With this painting, I tried to create imagery to represent a visceral, hard-to-describe feeling I have had recently. In the last couple months, I’ve had times where my mind just feels like static—a jumbled mess of fuzzy thoughts. At times, I’ve isolated myself or not wanted to leave the house because I’m scared to be part of the next tragic event. I’ve felt powerless against the decisions made by our nation’s leaders. I’ve felt alone in my own thoughts without people to talk to. The TV with static on the screen represents this cluttered mental state. Motionless, the skeleton sits worn and wasting away in the expansive desert to represent feelings of weakness and isolation. Initially, I was going to paint the background as a nighttime sky. However, I didn’t want this painting to be entirely bleak so I decided to paint a sunrise. I can often let current events negatively affect me, but I am lucky enough to have some people in my life who can remind me that not everything can be bad all of the time. Sometimes I need to look past the negativity and focus on the glimmer of hope on the horizon. I wanted to be very transparent about the meaning of this piece because I’m sure others can relate to it.
