Researchers from across @mcrfashioninstitute and @mcrschart collaborated with @the_bmhc and @mcys_manmet on Reclaiming the Narrative: Portrait Youth, exploring young British Muslim identity in Manchester. Reclaiming the Narrative (RTN) was a participatory arts-based collaboration between local young Muslims, researchers Dr Fatima Khan (@mcys_manmet), the British Muslim Heritage Centre and Professor Alice Kettle (@mcrschart). Working together they used collage, ceramics, textiles, dress and photography to explore and understand how the young people negotiate their identities within an era of structurally embedded and endemic Islamophobia. Collaborating with @portraityouth, an ongoing research project led by fashion academics Jo Jenkinson and John Earnshaw, RTN explored identity with the group of young British Muslims using dress, styling and photography. An innovative model that not only allows a new way of engaging with identity-making practices, but one that decentres the researcher and privileges the young Muslims’ agency within the research process. During a workshop, a group of young British Muslims styled themselves in clothing and artefacts that reflected and expressed their personal and collective identities. Award-winning photographer Maryam Wahid captured their styled looks and the series of striking portraits went on display in the British Muslim Heritage Centre. Keep a look out next week for even more exciting Portrait Youth news!
