After 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in police custody earlier this month, protests have erupted in Iran and all over the world, with thousands of brave Iranian women burning their hijabs and cutting their hair in the streets. Amini was visiting her family in Tehran, the capital of Iran, where police arrested her and accused her for violating a law that enforces women to cover their hair and neck with a hijab. While in custody, the Kurdish woman reportedly collapsed and was taken to the hospital where she spent 3 days in a coma before she died on September 16th. The young girl’s family, Iranians, and now people all over the world are standing in solidarity, demanding answers and justice for the death of Amini. Hair cutting is an ancient Persian tradition with “historical meaning” for Iranians, symbolizing mourning and a powerful form of protest against injustice. #mahsaamini
