booked a greek restaurant for my first meal back from santorini. didn’t expect much, having had the most amazing greek food on my vacation, but i thoroughly enjoyed the ambience and food (and drinks!) at zephyr.
we had the following dishes (roughly in order of preference):
- tarama (cod roe emulsion, kaffir lime) and pita bread
- seabass carpaccio (lemon-oil bonito, bottarga)
- calamari (buttermilk marinated squid, chilli jam mayo)
- lamb (charred spiced lamb cutlets)
- greek salad (barrel aged feta, caper leaf’s, rusks)
the one thing i appreciated most about the food was its subtlety. i really enjoyed the seabass carpaccio, but it is a dish that tends to appeal to my palate (as long as the fish is adequately fresh). what impressed me more were the tamara, calamari, and lamb chops - dishes that can be a tad heavy. zephyr’s version of these dishes were light, delicate, yet delicious; the tamara had such nuanced flavours, and the calamari was so fresh it’s hard to believe it was fried. the lamb chops were so tender and juicy i could have done with a couple more.
the only let down was the greek salad - but i feel that i can’t fault the restaurant as i was comparing it with the one i had at oia vineyart, which was made with such bright, fresh, juicy, sweet - unrealistically perfect - tomatoes.
the drinks were reasonably priced and soo good - particularly the muscat sour. the vibe was buzzy and chic, which works well both for couples and groups of friends. i had a really lovely time and will def be back.
8.8/10 - great ambience, food, and drinks; one to revisit!
ps ask for a candle if you don’t already have one on your table
